Grammar songs
When I was younger, I searched high and low for songs that would help me introduce a grammar point. But there were not many. There was the song Luka by Susan Vega, which has been used for ages to teach the past simple tense, and then I discovered the song Brighton in the Rain to teach the present perfect tense. And that was it—no more songs to teach grammar.
And then AI came, and it allowed me, a person who cannot sing and has no rhythm, to write good songs. And that was why I started writing the grammar songs that I had missed so much when I began teaching. In this post, I would like to share six songs that I have created and use to introduce various grammar points. I hope you find them useful as well.
Past continuous tense
This has been the most popular song that I have written so far. The melody is simple, and the lyrics clearly demonstrate the usage of the past simple tense.
There are several tasks you can do with this video. First, you can print the following worksheet and ask your student to listen and complete it. Or, if you want to use the song with no preparation, just ask the students to listen to the music and write all the examples of the past continuous tense in the song.
Verb patterns song
The following song is a hit among my students. It sounds like a real song written by a 1990s boy band, and the students enjoy mocking the lyrics. However, by paying close attention to the lyrics, they notice the verb patterns I want to introduce.
Once again, I have created a worksheet. Students listen and complete it with the words they hear.
Was x Were song
Shockingly, there is no song suitable for teaching the verbs “was” and “were.” Even though these are two of the most frequent words in English, I had to create a song where only these two verbs would be used. And it seems that I was not the only one who missed it, as it is one of the most popular videos I have created.
You can download a worksheet here, and your students should listen and complete it.
WILL song
Are you looking for a song that frequently uses the verb ‘will’? I have been using the song All My Loving by the Beatles, but I needed a song that demonstrates the usage of WILL for future events. Therefore, I created the following song.
Once again, you can play the song and introduce the grammar, or you can create a worksheet for them.
Have to song
In this song, I attempted to illustrate the application of a commonly used phrase in the life of a secret agent. Students find the music catchy, and it is a great way to introduce the verb HAVE TO.
Here you will find a worksheet for this song. Students listen and complete the lyrics.
Used to song
And in the end, you can see the most popular grammar song that I have created so far. Over two thousand people have seen it so far, and it has got 25 likes. It is a nice slow number where a boy remembers his childhood.
There is no worksheet for this grammar song, but in our post, ‘ USED TO Grammar Activities,’ you will find a set of activities that you can use with this song.
I hope you find this post interesting and useful. You can find more grammar songs by me on Youtube.
