Placement test for learners of English

Posted on Aug 14 2014 - 4:13am by Zdenda

Placement tests are very important for students of languages. First, they can serve as motivation because they show whether the students improved their knowledge. Second, they help students choose the correct course on their level. And last but not least they inform students how good their English is.

However, good placement tests are very expensive and mostly printed. That is why we have decided to create a placement test that will be available for free and in electronic form. The test is in HTML5 so the students will be able to take it on whichever device they have. If you are administering the test, you just tell the students the URL and ask them to show you their results once they have finished. Thus they can do the test on their mobile phones or tablets.

Placement test

The test contains 60 questions. All of the questions are multiple choice questions and there are five options to choose from for each question. Please, do not guess. Answer only the questions you feel that you know.

If you are taking the test on a mobile device, it might be more comfortable to see it full screen. To get a full screen version of the test, click on the button.

Placement test

As there were some problems with the server, I have added the flash version of the test. It is a bit quicker but it plays only on desktops (no iPads or mobile phones)

Placement test – flash

And here is another HTML5 version of the test, but it is placed on a different server. So if you experience any problems with the tests above, click here:

Placement test – HTML5

Placement test – share

If you have a blog or a website where you would like to share this test, you can do so by placing the following code there. To embed the test in your blog or website insert the following code:

<iframe width=”560″ height=”500″ src=” test/Placement test_share (Web)/index.html” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

To share the link, insert the following code. test/Placement test_share (Web)/index.html

Please, do not forget to mention our site if you share this

Placement test – Print version

As many teachers asked for a print version of the placement test, here it is. The file is in pdf:

Placement test_print

And here you can see the key to the placement test:

Placement test – comments

Please feel free to comment on the test. Even though we have put in a lot of effort and we checked everything many times, there still might be some mistakes. Please, feel free to inform us about them. THANK YOU and good luck with the test.
UPDATE: Thank you for your comments. I have added the “Review your answers” option and I have corrected one of the questions. Please, if you spot a mistake, inform me. Please, do not write the number of the question, as the questions are chosen randomly. Thank you very much.

Placement test – updates

Thank you for your comments. I have read them all and I have tried to improve the test. Now you can check all your answers and see your mistakes. You can print out the results too. At the moment I am working on a vocabulary test and on the print version of the placement test.

If you want to share the test on your site and see your students’ results, contact me at rotreklzdenek_at_gmail_dot_com and I make the test send the results to your e-mail address.

Thank you for helping me improve the test.

I think you misspelled THOUGH in the question 56. It should say THOUGHT. How can I see what I did wrong? Can I get these printed anyhow? Thank you!

U několika otázek, vzpomínám si teď jen na 3.otázku, je (IMHO) možnost více správných odpovědí než jen jedné. Zkuste na to ještě mrknout, mi se to už nechce procházet znovu.

  3. Anonymous 14/08/2014 at 7:47 am -

    It doesn’t work!!!

  4. sue shepherd 14/08/2014 at 8:22 am -

some of the questions or suggested answers are grammatically incorrect. Someone needs to edit the quiz. Apart from errors it is a good placement test.

  5. Zdenda 15/08/2014 at 4:59 am -

Some of the answers have to be incorrect. However, could you specify which question is incorrect, please? Thank you.

  6. Zdenda 15/08/2014 at 5:00 am -

    What device do you use?

  7. Zdenda 15/08/2014 at 5:05 am -

Počítač odpovědi míchá, takže otázku číslo 3 nemohu najít. Mrknu se na to. Kdybyste si pamatoval, co v té otázce bylo, pomohlo by mi to mooooc :-). Každopádně děkuji.

  8. Zdenda 15/08/2014 at 5:07 am -

You should be able to review the test, by clicking on the review button. I will check that it is enabled. Thanks for your feedback.

It’s a good test. However, some sentences need to be explained; I found them strange. Is this test printable?
Finally, I enjoyed it so much

  11. Zdenda 18/08/2014 at 9:59 am -

Please, could you specify which sentences you feel need more context? Thanks for the praise. I would like to add the printable version soon.

  12. Zdenda 18/08/2014 at 9:59 am -

    Thank you.

Hi – just wanted to let you know of a typo in the following sentence :The test is in HTML5 so the students will be able to take it on whichever devise they have (it should read as device).

Thank you for sharing the placement test and for making it available to everyone without a charge – God Bless

  14. Zdenda 18/08/2014 at 11:07 am -

    Thank you.

  15. Alena 18/08/2014 at 11:22 am -

There are lots of mistakes or questions for which none of the answers is correct. Disappointing.

  16. Zdenda 18/08/2014 at 12:06 pm -

I cannot agree. An educated native speaker went through all of the questions and she complained about only one of them. Please, could you write which questions you think faulty?

  17. Andrew 18/08/2014 at 12:32 pm -

Hi, I am from Johannesburg, South Africa. You have put a lot of work into this test. Well done!

  18. Zdenda 18/08/2014 at 12:47 pm -

    Thank you Andrew.

  19. Hok Hor 18/08/2014 at 1:29 pm -

Well, in the Direction paragraph.” All of the questions are multiple choice questions and there are five options to choose from for each questions”

After the word ” each” the noun should be ” Singular” .

  20. Alena 18/08/2014 at 2:42 pm -

I’ve checked and now everything seems to be correct! Thank you very much!

  21. Alena 18/08/2014 at 2:55 pm -

For some reason the correct answers did not show up in more that 10 questions. Now they do.

  22. reem 18/08/2014 at 10:54 pm -

It was really a very good test but it focuses on grammar more than vocabulary. We will be thankful if you can give another one that test vocabulary and comprehension thank you for your efforts

  23. Neelam Sharma 19/08/2014 at 2:28 am -

    I have scored 48, what’s my level?

  24. Zdenda 19/08/2014 at 3:27 am -

It is upper-intermediate. However, it could be advanced too. You can choose 🙂 Anyway, the result is extremely good.

  25. Zdenda 19/08/2014 at 3:29 am -

I have been working on a vocabulary test. I hope to publish it by the end of the week 🙂

  26. Zdenda 19/08/2014 at 3:30 am -

There was some kind of problem with the server. Sorry, about that.

  27. Zdenda 19/08/2014 at 3:31 am -

Thank you for spotting the typo. I will correct it. Thank you.

  28. Muhammad Ali 19/08/2014 at 5:59 am -

I got 34, just in intermediate. Hiks, my skill should be improved.

I am waiting for your another test.

You really have been doing a lot of work.
    I appreciated your effort.

  29. Zdenda 19/08/2014 at 6:15 am -

Thank you. I will publish the vocabulary test on Thursday (21st August) or Friday.

  30. Anonymous 19/08/2014 at 10:13 am -

my result 39 ….that encourage me to study more .
    thanks a lot

  31. Jenny 19/08/2014 at 10:39 am -

Item 4 has three possible answers (‘would speak’ and ‘spoke’ are also grammatically and contextually correct). You could substitute ‘would have spoke’ and ‘have been speaking’ as incorrect answers for these two, leaving ‘had spoken’ as the only correct answer.

  32. Zdenda 19/08/2014 at 11:33 am -

Your English is obviously very good. Congratulations.

  33. Zdenda 19/08/2014 at 11:35 am -

I have been thinking about this item ever since I wrote it. However, several native speakers who took the test did not complain and that is why I left it there. I will consult another educated native speaker and I will let you know.
    Thanks for your feedback anyway.

  34. GK 19/08/2014 at 4:00 pm -

I really like the test — simple but also challenging to figure out levels of English quickly — a few suggestions:
#10 — the “and” in the sentence is awkward, possible deletion to make more sense with the “nor is he”
#14 — maybe simpler sentence, some of the choices are very similar
    #51 — Jame’s — typo — James’
Thanks for taking the time to do this… great job!

  35. Heidi 19/08/2014 at 4:48 pm -

I like this quick scan. Thank you.
In this item “My boss isn’t very polite, and _____ particularly fair!” I think it is better to omit the word “and”.

  36. Zdenda 20/08/2014 at 3:19 am -

Thank you for spotting the problems. I will check them and correct them. Thank you.

  37. abdallah 24/08/2014 at 10:49 am -

i thought it difficult but didn’t , anyhow, where are the answers?

  38. Zdenda 25/08/2014 at 2:34 pm -

If you click on review after you finish, you can see all the correct answers.

  39. ratnesh pareek 06/09/2014 at 10:38 am -

i got 43 ……….. its too good for new learners
    would you please tell me
have u posted any other test except it ?

  40. Zdenda 06/09/2014 at 12:06 pm -

Test your vocabulary. Obviously your grammar is great but how about your vocabulary? The tests are at and at
    Good luck

  41. Florence 07/09/2014 at 6:17 am -

    Hello Zdenda!

Thank you very much for this placement test. I scored 57, yay! 🙂

I hope you could also provide a feedback, based on the result of the test, where the test taker will be guided on which aspects of grammar to work on.

    Thank you!!!

  42. Zdenda 09/09/2014 at 3:21 am -

I will think about it. At this moment I cannot see how to do it technically, but I will think about it a lot. Thanks for the inspiration.

  43. Adam 09/09/2014 at 3:50 am -

I got 50, and I made a few silly mistakes. I hope if I take another placement test, I’ll be able to do better. But one suggestion I would like make is that, the answers should have explanations, so we can understand easily where we went wrong in case we don’t get the right answer, and subsequently learn from our mistakes.

  44. Zdenda 09/09/2014 at 4:03 am -

Thanks for the suggestion and congratulations on your result. I will try to do it.

  45. Susan 09/09/2014 at 1:06 pm -
